The Rev. Dr. Collin Cowan

On 4th November 2010 the Rev. Dr. Collin I. Cowan was inducted as General Secretary for the
Council for World Mission (CWM) at a special service held at the Andrews United Church, in Ocho
Rios, Jamaica.

In handing the task to Rev. Dr. Cowan, outgoing General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Des van de Water,
symbolically handed Rev. Dr. Cowan a lighthouse.

In his response, Rev. Dr. Cowan paid tribute to Dr. van der Water for his outstanding leadership and
dedication. He charged our Moderator, Rt. Rev. Henley Bernard, to ensure that a task and ministry
location remains for his return as he will, after a season with the CWM.

As he charged the gathering, the Moderator of CWM, the Rev. Dr. Prince Dibeela, encouraged the
Rev. Dr. Cowan to lead with courage, boldness and passion, for which he is known. He charged Rev.
Dr. Cowan to lead, so that the CWM member churches can walk with each other, wipe each others’
tears, lift up the other when he falls and live the theology of grace and family love.

As the Rev. Dr. Cowan prepares to demit office as General Secretary of the United Church in Jamaica
and the Cayman Islands, a service of appreciation and farewell will be held at Webster Memorial
United Church in Kingston, Jamaica, on Sunday 5th December at 3pm.
