UTCWI - REACHING OUT IN THE CARIBBEAN -Rev Dr Dave Hazle

Wednesday May 17, 2023

Over the past two years The Guyana
Congregational Union (GCU) has been
part of an initiative among churches in a
number of denominations in Guyana to
increase their impact in the schools
across Guyana. In preparation for that
thrust, I was invited by the GCU leadership
to conduct a week-long training
workshop on school chaplaincy.
The United Church in Jamaica and the
Cayman Islands (UCJCI) has enjoyed
partnership relations with GCU for many
years including through common mission
organisations such as Council for World
Mission (CWM), with both churches
constituting CWM Caribbean, and
Caribbean and North American Council
for Mission (CANACOM). Currently a CWM
Partner in Mission from Jamaica, Ms.
Faithlyn Stephens serves GCU in an
administrative capacity and coordinated
the training in school chaplaincy.

SYNOD IS OVER. NOW WHAT?

Wednesday May 10, 2023

Jesus' commission to His disciples recorded in Matthew
28: 19, 20 continues to constitute the marching orders of
the United Church. Guided by the vision - Touching Lives,
Nurturing disciples and Seeking Transformation through
Christ, UCJCI carries out its ministry and mission among
people in communities on a local, regional, and global
scale.
The Synod, constituting representation from
congregations in partnership with lay pastors, ordained
and commissioned ministers have reviewed reports on
work done in the synodical period. This highest court of
the denomination listened to children and youth,
recognized existing challenges and celebrations in
national, regional, and global contexts, and informed by
those pieces of information, discussed and discerned the
way forward through identified priorities.

U C J C I 4 3 R D S Y N O D Popular Report

Wednesday May 03, 2023

It's Time to Pull
up Anchor and
Move!

Rt. Rev. Gary Harriott, Moderator of UCJCI, delivered the
sermon closing the 43rd Synod of UCJCI with a stirring call to
the church to action after receiving the marching orders over
the previous five days through sermons, bible study,
deliberations and collective discernment.
Referencing the experience of the early church after the
igniting of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the Moderator stated
that the United Church must also be on the move and will
never be the same. Life in the Spirit is marked by boldness
Rev. Harriott called for the United Church to stand up and
speak up and to defend the ‘faith in the public space. In so
doing the United Church should speak truth to power’ as
our mission is not only to the poor and vulnerable but also “to
those who are strategically placed in society ... to set the
tone for what goes on around town”. He elevated advocacy as
a core responsibility of the  church.

SYNOD IN FOCUS

Wednesday Apr 19, 2023

As our Church prepares to assemble to
discuss matters pertaining to the direction
of the Ministry to which Christ has called us,
it is imperative that we fast and pray. Fasting and Prayer are Christian Spiritual
Disciplines that position our souls to be open
to the empowerment and leading of the Holy
Spirit.

RECONNECT WITH THE RISEN CHRIST by Rev Nobert Stephens UCJCI General Secretary

Wednesday Apr 12, 2023

To this point in your life, what is
your story?
What are the nature and texture and
the pattern of the life you have lived to
this point? What have been the
high points and low points, the
celebrations and the struggles you
have and or enduring?
On this Easter Sunday, we all have a
story to tell. The resurrection story
highlights two things which, when
they are a feature of the human
story, render the human spirit and
will powerless. We find them in the
varied ways in which the gospels
portray the resurrection events, on
this day we label Easter Sunday:
doubts and fear.

Wednesday Mar 15, 2023

Last Thursday, March 9, 2023, stakeholders gathered for a full day of presentations and workshops for a symposium on
Peacebuilding in Schools under the theme, “Overcoming Conflicts through Peacebuilding in Schools”. The presentations
on Peace Building Programmes were done by Dr. Kim Scott, Programme Director for the Child Resiliency Programme, Dr.

Mr. Richard Troupe, Director of Safety and Security, at the Ministry of Education and Youth, also shared greetings.
A lot of important information was strategically shared as one of the intentions of this symposium was to provide training
for the stakeholders for them to go back into the various spaces and share, practice and implement. As such, they were
invited to register for one of three workshops in their area of interest and expertise.
Workshop one focused on Implementing Peace Building Strategies in the School Space, workshop two focused on Peace
Building in School and Community and workshop three focused on The Church in Peace Building in the Home and
Community.

International Women’s Day 2023

Wednesday Mar 08, 2023

According to the International Women’s Day website (2023), the aim of this year’s #EmbraceEquality theme is “to get
the world talking about why equal opportunities aren't enough.”
So many conversations have been had about the need for equity versus equality yet, we often struggle to understand
the difference. Here is a simple breakdown:
“Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same resources or opportunities.
Equity recognizes that each person has different circumstances, and allocates the exact resources and opportunities
needed to reach an equal outcome.”
-Equality versus Equity: What's the difference as we #EmbraceEquity for IWD 2023 and beyond? (2023)

Day of Fellowship 2023

Wednesday Mar 01, 2023

On February 22, 2023, the Southern Regional Mission
Council made the grand return to Clarendon College
for the annual Ash Wednesday Convention under the
theme Re-igniting the call: From a spark to a blaze!
The Clarendon College auditorium was full with over
1000 people in attendance, 157 of which were children
and youth. The Girls’ and Boys’ Brigades along with
Cadets from Clarendon College participated in the
procession, which also featured a literal flaming torch.
An Olympic motif was utilized to symbolize the need
for partnership and succession in ministry.
Speakers blazed a trail with the word in a relay with
the passing of a real baton:

Ash Wednesday– Lent

Wednesday Feb 22, 2023

The period of lent starts with a
celebration and ends with a
celebration. It is a time to
celebrate the lord but it is also a
time to reflect, fast, pray, and
prepare for easter.
Jesus himself went into the
wilderness to fast for these 40
days in preparation for the
fulfillment of the promise. During
this time, He was tempted by the
devil.
This holy season is one of
self-denial. Jesus taught us to rid
ourselves of evil to prepare and
share in the fulfillment of the
promise on the horizon.
Lent is a journey that is supposed
to involve pr aying and
fasting- sacrifice. A time of
mourning and penitence, and we
start with ashes.
