LEADERSHIP CORNER

Wisdom Pointers for the Effective Leader
Leaders celebrate the special days of team members. “Unless we think of others and do something for them, we miss one of the greatest sources of happiness.” (Ray Lyman Wilbur)

Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, births—these events mark the passage of life. Good leaders are aware of the life stages of their team members. By celebrating these special days, they affirm their team members’ value

NEW PRESIDENT OF IUC

Thursday Aug 01, 2019

It is with pleasure that the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands welcomes the Rev. Dr. Roderick Hewitt to the position of President
of the International University of the Caribbean (IUC). His tenure in office will begin on September 1,2019. A Minister of the UCJCI, who is married to Wilhelmina and together have three (3) adult children, Rev. Dr. Hewitt has served in academia both locally and internationally, and his illustrious training and experience have been tremendously substantial and extensive.

LEADERSHIP CORNER

How Can I Help Others to Fulfil Their Potential? Having the right people in the right places is essential to individual and team success.
If you succeed in developing people in your organization and equipping them to lead, you will be successful. If you enlarge and motivate them to achieve, they will be grateful to you as their leader. And to be honest, you will have done more than many other leaders do. However, you can take yet another step that will help someone you equip to fulfil their potential. You can help them to find their niche in life. Good things happen when a player takes the place where he or she adds the most value. Great things happen when all the players on the team take the roles that maximize their strengths—their talent, skill, and experience. It takes every individual—and the whole team—to a whole new level.

NERMC Children’s Sports Evangelism

Friday Jul 26, 2019

Cluster 7 of our North-Eastern Regional Mission Council has embarked on a table tennis and sportsmanship training programme for children within the cluster, on Saturdays for the month of July 2019! Eighteen (18) children participated in the first week, while there were twenty-eight (28) participants in the second week.

LEADERSHIP CORNER - Passion: Take This Life and Love It
“When a leader reaches out in passion, he (she) is usually met with an answering passion.” (John C. Maxwell)

Experts spend a lot of time trying to figure out what makes people successful. They often look at people’s credentials, intelligence, education, and other factors. But more than most other things, passion makes the difference. David Sarnoff said, “Nobody can be successful unless he (she) loves his (her) work.”

If you look at the lives of effective leaders, you will find that they often don’t fit into a stereotypical mould. Take a look at four (4) truths about passion and what it can do for you as a leader:

73 SOULS SAVED AT CHILDREN’S CAMP 2019!!

Friday Jul 26, 2019

It was a great and spirited affair! The UCJCI’s Children’s Camp 2019 included 112 children from 35 congregations from July 6-12 at Madge Saunders Conference Centre, St. Mary. It was also a truly inspiring one for both the campers and leaders, and 73 children committed or recommitted their lives to the Lord! Heaven rejoiced at the new birth, and so do we! A stirring sermon was delivered by camper, Abigail Davis of St. Paul’s Lockett Avenue, at Immanuel United Church during the customary special service on the sec ond day of camp. Indeed, the message was impactful for the campers, who were encouraged to witness for Christ, and comforted by the truth that they are not too young to do so.

LEADERSHIP CORNER: “Success seems to be connected with action".
Successful people keep moving. They make mistakes, but they don’t quit. (Conrad Hilton)

Leaders are responsible for initiating a connection with their followers. But that’s not the only area where leaders must show initiative. They must always look for opportunities and be ready to take action.  What qualities do leaders possess that enable them to make things happen? There are at least four (4).

Savanna-la-Mar United Young Adults Evangelize across Sectors!!

Friday Jul 12, 2019

Evangelism is the Heartbeat of the Church, and that is the conviction that led the Young Adults of Savannala-Mar United Church to host their inaugural Heart of Worship Outreach Event.
Held on June 24-28, 2019 at the church, and attended by twenty-three (23) community members and twenty (20) church members, the young adults aimed to interact and share the gospel with the unsaved in various sectors. Those groups included Police Officers, fFremen, Post Office Workers, Pharmacy, and Medical Personnel, as well as staff of the National Housing Trust (NHT) and the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).

LEADERSHIP CORNER
Teachability: To Keep Leading, Keep Learning
“Value your listening and reading time at roughly ten times your talking time.
This will assure you that you are on a course of continuous learning and selfimprovement.” (Gerald McGinnis)

If a leader already possesses influence and has achieved a level of respect, why should he or she keep growing? The answer is simple: Your growth determines who you are. Who you are determines who you attract. Who you attract determines the success of your organization. If you want to grow your organization, you have to remain teachable.

Man Cave!!!

Thursday Jul 04, 2019

Approximately seventy-seven (77) males of Webster Memorial United Church (Jamaica) retreated to their Man Cave in a homely setting in the Church Hall on June 13, 2019,  to consider “Manhood Re-wired”!
A “Man Cave” or “manspace” is a metaphor for a male retreat where men feel free to do as they please, indulge in hobbies, and hang out with friends, without fear of upsetting any female sensibilities. There are no women around!

LEADERSHIP CORNER
Self-Discipline: The First Person You Lead Is You
No one achieves and sustains success without selfdiscipline. And no matter how gifted a leader is, his or her gifts will never reach their maximum potential without the application of self-discipline. It positions a leader to go to the highest level and is a key to leadership that lasts.

Leadership Corner Relationships: Indispensable to Effective Leadership
The ability to work with people and develop relationships is absolutely indispensable to effective leadership. If employees need good people skills, think about how much more critical those skills are for leaders. People truly do want to  go along with people they get along with. And while someone can have people skills and not be a good leader, he or she cannot be a good leader without people skills. What can a person do to manage and cultivate good relationships as a leader? It requires three (3) things:

UCJCI MEN & YOUTH UNITE!!

Monday Jun 24, 2019

Healthy families play together! That was, indeed, what members of the Men’s and Youth Fellowships of Meadowbrook United Church (MUC) did on their trip to Hollywell National Forest Park, in the hills of St. Andrew, on April 6, 2019!  It was a day of fun, frolic, bible study, meal-sharing, and Power Talk!
The connection between the men and Youth was palpable. Throughout the day they found themselves bonding - a significant and community-transforming development and a tremendous way to mark the church’s 60th year!

Leadership Corner
“You can’t lead people if you need people.” John C. Maxwell
No one can live on a level inconsistent with the way he or she sees him- or herself. You may have observed that in people. If someone sees him- or herself as a loser, he or she finds a way to lose. Anytime a person’s success surpasses their security, the result is self-destruction. That’s not only true for followers, but it’s also true for leaders.

Insecure leaders are dangerous—to themselves, their followers, and the organizations they lead—because a leadership position amplifies personal flaws. Whatever negative baggage you have in life only gets more difficult to bear when you’re trying to lead others

EVANGELISM THE #HEARTBEAT OF THE CHURCH

Wednesday Jun 12, 2019

No activity or movement will be as effective in changing the social, economic and political landscape of Jamaica and the world than Evangelism. It is the heartbeat of God, and the highest call of Christ’s Church. Jesus’ parting words to His disciples were, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).

LEADERSHIP CORNER
“Smart leaders believe only half of what they hear. Discerning leaders know which half to believe.” (John C. Maxwell)
Discernment can be described as the ability to find the root of the matter, and it relies on intuition as well as rational thought. Effective leaders need discernment, although even good leaders don’t display it all the time. For example, read this comment made by a leader:
“I think there is a world market for about five computers.” Thomas J. Watson, Chairman of IBM (1943)
Discernment is an indispensable quality for any leader who desires to maximize effectiveness.

MEADOWREST MEMORIAL GARDENS Honours its Marketers!!

Thursday Jun 06, 2019

On 55 acres of rolling, lush countryside, in rustic, easily accessible terrain in St. Catherine, Jamaica, lies Meadowrest Memorial Gardens, established and operated by the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands since 1994. The success of this enterprise has, in no small part, been attributable to the relations and business generated by the Funeral Directors who patronize and assist to promote the burial site.

LEADERSHIP CORNER
“The true leader serves. Serves people. Serves their best interests, and in so doing will not always be popular, may not always impress. But because true leaders are motivated by loving concern rather than a desire fir personal glory, they are willing to pay the price.” (Eugene B. Habecker)
