Thursday Apr 18, 2024
On Sunday April 14, 2024 history was made. The United Reformed Church (URC) which includes congregations in England, Scotland and Wales tendered a public apology to Jamaica for its role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and chattel slavery. The apology was made at an Ecumenical Church Service planned by the Churches Reparations Action Forum (CRAF) held at Webster Memorial United Church. The statement of acknowledgement was presented initially at the General Assembly of the United Reformed Church in 2022 as “an expression of its commitment to write the wrongs of a hostile history.” In presenting the apology, Rev. Dr. Tessa Henry Robinson, Moderator of the General Assembly of the URC spoke on behalf of a body representing 37,000 members. please click here for more information (PDF file) |

SEEKING A PATH TO JUSTICE AND HEALING - A CASE FOR REPARATIONS
Friday Apr 12, 2024
CHURCH’S REPARATIONS ACTION FORUM (CRAF) Many in the Caribbean are not convinced that the Reparations cause will ever be successful. Consequently, there are Christians who dub all such efforts a waste of time. CRAF invites members of Christian churches to see differently. Established in 2019, CRAF seeks to become a conduit for church action, and is committed to supporting churches across the Caribbean in their efforts to engage the issues arising from the legacies of the enslavement of African people and the Reparations cause. please click here for more information (PDF file) |

THE PIERCED HAND - Kevin ‘Nana Moses’ Calvert

‘I am the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live; and everyone that lives and believes in me, shall never die. Do you believe this?’ Go with me for a moment to witness what was perhaps the foggiest night in history. The scene is very simple. You will recognise it quickly, a grove of twisted olive trees, ground cluttered with large rocks, a low stone fence and dark, dark night. Now look into the picture, look closely through the shadowy foliage. See that solitary figure, flat on the ground, face stained with dirt and tears, fists pounding the hard earth; eyes, wide with a stupor of fear, hair matted with salty sweat. Is that blood on his forehead? please click here for more information (PDF file) |

LENTEN FEATURE - SEARCH ME O GOD - Susan Dorward

Psalm 139: 23,24 Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. David wanted to analyze his motives and behavior, asking God to guide him and help him see what thoughts or actions may not align with God’s thoughts. Why would David ask God to do this? Because David knew that his way of thinking might cause a chasm separating him from God, and that was the last thing David wanted. please click here for more information (PDF file) |

WCC and the Roman Catholic Church in Joint Effort A Joint Working Group has been established to support a growing partnership that benefits all programmatic areas of the World Council of Churches (WCC) of which the UCJCI is a part. According to the WCC website: The Roman Catholic Church is the largest, by far, among those churches that are not members of the WCC. Cooperation between the Roman Catholic Church and the WCC continues to grow across all aspects of the WCC’s work for a common Christian witness and service. The Joint Working Group, co-sponsored by the WCC and the Roman Catholic Church, is an effective tool to strengthen this cooperation. Rev. Dr. Yvette Noble Bloomfield, one of UCJCI’s representatives to WCC, is a member of the Joint Working Group. please click here for more information (PDF file) |

LENTEN REFLECTION - ‘HERE I AM, LORD’ - Rev. Dr. Yvette Noble-Bloomfield
Thursday Feb 29, 2024
There is a difference between 'I am here' and 'Here I am.' 'I am here' is an announcement of ourpresence. ‘I am here to control, display power, and ensure things are according to my will and desire.’ 'I am here' is not dependent on a call or a request from anyone. It is not a response but rather a self-assertion and suggestion of self-importance. When the same three words are re-ordered as 'Here I am', the words become a response to a call and a submission to the caller's request. The humble posture we need to have before the Lord. please click here for more information (PDF file) |

CWM COMMUNICATORS ADVOCATE LIFE, DIGNITY AND JUSTICE
Thursday Feb 08, 2024
During a Council for World Mission (CWM) communications workshop held 16-20 January 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 30 communicators from member churches in Africa, East Asia, Europe, the Pacific, and South Asia, as well as ecumenical partners United Evangelical Mission and the World Association for Christian Communication, gathered to reflect on the CWM Assembly theme “Rise to Life: Together in Transformation”. A world facing conflict, climate change, and increasing social and economic inequalities, as well as uneven access to digital technologies, calls us to rise together to foster communication that is both life-affirming and transformative. Implementing new and traditional communication, CWM communicators are honing their messages and telling the stories that illustrate the assembly theme in everyday life amid the many spaces in which we live and move. please click here for more information (PDF file) |

THE LEGACY OF WOMEN
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
I would guess that if members of the UCJCI were asked which is the most impacting auxiliary, the Women's Fellowship would rank among the top two. Few would deny the successful effort at fund-raising, care and support for Children's Homes, scholarships and awards powered by groups of women in congregations. This admirable legacy ought to be celebrated. Last Sunday was Women's Fellowship Sunday during which many new members were enrolled and the call was made to join. This is commendable. Congregations should also be urged to expand ministries to women as further ways are sought to engage and reach women for Christ. That is one powerful way of celebrating the legacy of the movement. please click here for more information (PDF file) |
